The novel is a funny subtle exploration of the pain of adjusting to divorce and then having the new balance of mother and children upset with a new and possibly permanent man in the family. Kitty then realises why she was chosen and then proceeds to tell her story of " Goggle Eyes". It transpires that the other girl Helly, has a divorced mother with a new man in her life that she hates. These lines focus on Satan and what he reveals as he talks. This occurs right before he enters paradise. The speaker in this section of the poem I understand to be Satan as these lines take place during his passionate speech to the sun. He's upset about the consequences not regretting the bad act the prompted the consequences. ![]() ![]() Also these lines introduce the idea of Satan having a conscience which tells us that he knows right from wrong, but his conscience is provoking despair for himself, I think, not remorse for what he's done. Despair seems to be used a lot in this poem, and I'm not sure what exactly Satan is despondent over. The passage seems to me to be pretty melancholy. On line 23 the speaker starts talking about Satan's conscience and how it evokes the memory of what he used to be and raises the despair of knowing that he isn't an angel anymore and that worse sufferings are still to come. It goes on to say that he wasn't rejoicing afterward, that he was horrified and doubting himself, but he can't get away from Hell, no matter where he goes, because Hell is within him. The next lines go on to say that Satan was enraged when he first arrived on Earth and speaks of him tempting Eve. ![]() The Book starts with a warning about Satan's coming, calling him the "secret foe". The Speaker is introducing the reader to Earth for the first time. ![]() ![]() We don’t live in Edinburgh and, as the number of our visits there happen to be rather limited, our vision of this fascinating city owes much to our readings, each of them adding its little touch to the sense of place we got there and making us still more eager to go back to the beautiful Scottish capital.įrom even before the times when it was nicknamed ‘Auld Reekie’, Edinburgh has been a great source of inspiration for poets and novelists. ![]() Edinburgh Festival Fringe Information 180 High Street © 2006 Scotiana ![]() ![]() This autobiography about finding yourself on a world trip is based on the life of American author Elizabeth Gilbert.
